For President – (reluctantly) – OBAMA – (Part 1)

My love for American politics got blown away with the back of John Kennedy’s head in 1963. I was 13. As a well-read kid, I knew the ‘Oswald – Lone Nut’ theory was a crock of shit – but I couldn’t understand why our own govern- ment would lie to us. Today 4 out of 5 Americans do not believe the “Official” report – but at that time (when the numbers were reversed) you too would have gotten mighty confused had you been 13 – and all the adults thought of you as just a precocious dope.

I still clung on to parts of the American Political Fantasy for the next 5-years. I still wanted to believe. Then Martin Luther King was murdered by a “drifter” who didn’t have enough money for a decent room – but managed to travel around the world with lots of cash. Another ‘lone nut’ – hmmm.

But at least Bobby could light the beacon of America again – maybe – he was the only one left! Right. He was left on the floor of a hotel’s pantry filled with more bullets than he and the surrounding walls could possibly catch from the single gun of the convicted assassin.

My belief in the American political system was in tatters – but I still wanted to believe. Then came Vietnam. THAT WAS IT! Enough was enough. I refused to be taken for a fool any longer. Fool me once – shame on you. Fool me a dozen times ……………

I was given a college deferment so some other 19-year old could get his (usually black and poor) ass shot off. At least I had enough decency to tell my local draft board, “give me any goddam status you want: I’M NOT GOING! Yank my deferment – DRAFT ME! – Let’s get it on, MF-ers!” I never heard from them again. I entered college as a Political Science major – who refused to vote.

“But you know so much about politics!” people chirped, “Why don’t you vote?

“You just answered your own question,” I’d say.

Tomorrow: Part II – Why vote? Why Obama?

    Great post Franco.

I think this says it better than anything ever has yet.

I agree with your column in a general way, but I do have one comment and one question.

The current volunteer army is over populated by minorities, but the VietNam era draft mostly sucked in men, white and otherwise, who failed to finagle a deferment. Each county had to meet a quota, and many counties didn’t even have a minority population from which to draw its victims. It wasn’t a matter of color; more than anything it was determined by economic status.

You clearly believe some type of power structure is undermining our political system. Any guesses as to the identities of the players?

The assassinations are easy to solve – in fact, the answers came out years ago despite the gov’ts efforts at cover-ups and disinformation.

The “conspirators” behind John Kennedy’s murder are the easiest to figure out. Members of organized crime, rogue elements in the intelligence community, right-wing Texas oil barons and anti-Castro Cubans were the main players. Each had solid motives –

Mafia- the mob pretty much stole the 1960 election for Kennedy through the efforts of Joe Kennedy. Joe promised that if Jack were elected, the pressure against organized crime would stop. They had so many dead people voting in Chicago, they may have outnumbered the living! Chicago swung Illinois which put Kennedy over the electoral top.

But then JFK appointed Bobby Attorney General and the mob was visciously attacked like never before! Big time hoods were harassed, indictments from the justice department rained down, and all their businesses took nose dives. The cons were conned by the Kennedys and vowed revenge. But worse – they started losing big money and their best people. AND Kennedy was ‘soft’ on Castro so they might never get their Cuban hotels and casinos back (which Castro had nationalized).

Rogue elements of the I.C. – the CIA HATED Kennedy. They blamed him for the Bay of Pigs Disaster which killed or jailed thousands of their Cuban buddies. Kennedy promised to “smash the CIA into a million pieces” and they weren’t going to let that happen. PLUS Kennedy was “soft on communism” and agreed not to invade Cuba if Russia removed its missiles from the island.

Right-wing Texas Oil Barons – Kennedy was going after the oil-depletion allowance which allowed many of them to get rich PLUS he was for Integration and all around their world would be better with LBJ who was going to be dropped from the ‘64 ticket because of his scandals.

Anti-Castro Cubans – for obvious reasons.

There were others but these were the main players. Note they ALL had strong motives to kill Kennedy…so did J.Edgar Hoover, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, etc. The only poor schmuck who had NO MOTIVE to kill Kennedy was Oswald. He was the patsy.

To be continued someday …. if you like
