Cheetah and costars in “Tarzan Of the Apes”

Cheetah, the chimpanzee who starred in the Tarzan movies in the 1930’s, died of kidney failure this week.  He was 80.

In his later years, Cheetah retired to the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor, Florida where he enjoyed watching sports on television, and listening to music.  He also loved to laugh and make people laugh too.

Actress Mia Farrow, whose mother, Maureen O’Sullivan, starred as Jane in the Tarzan films, wrote, “My mom invariably referred to Cheetah as ‘that bastard.’” Jealous bitch.

The first two Weismuller Tarzan flicks featured a very horny ape man who refused to take no for an answer. Then the “code” stepped in and Jane became an amiable companion.

Chimps can be a handful once they hit puberty. One of the chimps featured on Marlin Perkins’s nature show ended up at the Buffalo zoo and would perform tricks on cue. They just get too big and strong to control.

Sand Monkeys are a trip. We had one for a mascot. The Vietnamese women wore those wide legged black like pajama pants and the monkey could smell a womman at the time of month from 20 feet away. If he was untied he’s run up behind them and try to crawl up their pantleg while theyed scream and start running away. If he couldn’t get up their pant’s, which he couldn’t he’d come out and jumpup on their litle running pants and try to leave a wet spot. Then if one of those little female dogs ran by he’d run up behind them and grab a couple of fistfulls of doggy butthair and burry his face in their little doggy. They would run away and he’s try to hold them by putting the brakes on with his two feet digging into the dirt and theyed go around in circles and he looked like he was sand skiing behind them. Sticking his face in and licking like crazy for more speed. When we put him back in his cage he’s just stare at us real mad and start jacking off, over and over again until we brought him to the female monkey mascot of the unit next door. Where they would Monkey around-a LOT. When he was finally all wore out he come back to his cage peacefully for a while until he started to get that look again and start playing with himself.

I just saw an elderly Maureen O’Sullivan on a clip between old movies on a classic movie channel. She was still pretty cool but truly ancient. And she said she really never understood what the flap about how she dressed was. That she definitely showed LESS than you can see on any American Beach today. I think she was paying more attention to what Tarzan was wearing. Neil Budd met Johnny Weismuller when he came to Rochester in the 70’s and was himself around 75. We asked him what he was like. Neil said, “He was like a big tall old Tarzan!” He was polishing his Dusenburg with a shammy made out of Cheetah.
