America . . .

. . . may be the only country on Earth that needs to remind parents on billboards, bumper stickers, and T-shirts to ‘Hug Your Kids’.

In some cultures, parents routinely hug their children. In others, they do not. It’s not because they don’t love them; they simply don’t express it that way. I had great parents, but I have no memory of either of them ever giving me a hug. America is not a terrible place because of that, nor is she unique.

What I really love is attending family gatherings in which the husband’s family are a bunch of huggers but the wife’s is not (or vice versa). The look of panic on the faces of the more reserved family while being embraced is priceless.
