Food? Americans Have The French Creamed!

fat-people-5385381-273x3001

Americans are fat.  Two out of three of us are considered “obese” – and getting fatter. If the world’s food supply were a buffet line, it would be a good idea to jump in ahead of the American food-vacuums. We’d smash the damn sneeze guards to get second and third helpings.

The French, supposedly the “world’s gourmands,” can’t even come close in pounds (or kilos.)  Only 7% of France is overweight despite the country drowning most entrees, side dishes, and desserts in butter, cream, and fat.  The average American is 30-pounds heavier than an average French person.

Why the heavy difference? A recent study suggested the French eat fewer calories overall and they eat less often.  They don’t eat driving, on the run, at their desks, talking on the phone, in bed, or watching television. And they eat their food s-l-o-w-l-y – even at “fast food” outlets.

One of the largest reasons for the weight difference is portions.  In the few times I’ve eaten at fancy French restaurants, I’ve mistaken the entrees for appetizers. Few French people have even heard of ‘doggie bags.’  And if you sold French portions at a Jewish deli, you’d be in court the rest of your life.
