As A Person, He Bombed

Tuesday, September 19th, 2017

George P. Metesky, better known as the “Mad Bomber,” terrorized New York City for 16 years in the 1940s and ’50s. He planted 33 bombs of which 22 exploded and injured 15 people.  No victims died but the city was on edge for years because no one knew where he would strike next. George planted bombs in Radio City Music Hall, subways, public restrooms, Grand Central Station, the New York Public Library, and the RCA Building. His favorite venue was movie theaters.

Metesky was angry (to say the least) because he was injured as an employee at Con Ed and said they didn’t treat him fairly.  He swamped newspapers and police stations with taunting letters and, patriotically, stopped bombing for the duration of WW II!

In 1957,  “Public Enemy Number One,” George Metesky, was finally arrested and immediately confessed to 16 years of bombing. It wasn’t difficult to determine that he was  “hopelessly and incurably mentally ill,” and found incompetent to stand trial.

After serving 2/3 of his 25-year sentence in a mental institution, George was released. He quietly lived in his own home until he died 20-years later at the age of 90.
