My Brother Died Last Week.

Saturday, June 24th, 2017

David was 59 and would have turned 60 on the 4th of July.  He was also a mental health patient with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a terrible disease of the mind which produces reality distortions, paranoia, bizarre thinking, and sometimes, hallucinations.

Like most people with schizophrenia, David was able to live normally in his own world with medication, the help of loving family members, and a caring community environment.

Although we watched over him, he was stubbornly independent in living his own life and resented it when we interfered. Just like all family members, David could be a pain in the ass. He was also gentle, very funny, and often laughed at himself.

People with mental illness are usually afraid and terribly insecure. The best thing I did for my brother was give him a small sense of security from a mad, threatening world.  He thought I could protect him from anything and carried this card in his wallet:

I’m not a lawyer and he spelled my name wrong – but I’m very proud of this little card.
