Your Hang-Up About Hanging Up

Monday, December 12th, 2016

If a stranger walked up to you on the street and tried to sell you something, wouldn’t you quickly walk away? Of course you would.  Yet when someone you’ve never met calls you in the privacy of your own home, you think it’s rude to just hang up without saying anything.  Senior citizens are especially vulnerable to telemarketers because most are so polite.

Think of how modern telemarketing works. A large number of people sit in front of computer screens with their headsets on. The computer is ringing many phone numbers at the same time.  When you pick up, the machine flashes your name and info on the screen and the “caller” says your name.  He then starts his script which is also on the screen.

Basically a telemarketer’s job is to quickly get through all the ‘not interested’ calls until he hits someone who wants to buy.  Depending on the company, he may have to go through hundreds of ‘no’s’ to get a hit.  His worst fear? Some polite dolt with no intention of buying keeps him on the phone blocking other callers with whom he may get lucky.

Fortunately I have an answering machine/screener so I never have this problem. But if you answer your phone and it’s a stranger, the best thing you can do is just quickly hang up without saying a word. The computer will go to the next number within microseconds.
