Should UN Intervene With US Gun Violence?

Sunday, April 24th, 2016

September 29, 2013

“If it’s viewed as an international humanitarian crisis, does it call for outside intervention? As citizens of the world, perhaps we should demand an end to the unimaginable suffering of victims and their families – the maiming and killing of children – just as America does in every new civil conflict around the globe.

The annual toll from firearms in the US is running at 32,000 deaths and climbing, even though the general crime rate is on a downward path. If this perennial slaughter doesn’t qualify for intercession by the UN, it is hard to know what does.

That 212,994 more Americans lost their lives from firearms in the last 45 years than in all wars involving the US is a staggering fact.”

This is from a column by Henry Porter in the British paper ‘The Guardian”  It was sent to me by my friend Ned Ludd.  I think it’s very funny.

First of all, everyone knows where I stand on more impotent gun legislation:  too late; 300-million guns already out here. But I laugh at the anticipated reaction of most Americans to this very idea.

“WHAT!  WhyTF is this tea-sipping, chimney sweep sticking his nose in our business?!  We can run our own country even if it’s filled with violence, religious wars, regional rivalries, overwhelming corruption, and a dysfunctional government!  MYOFB!”

Our hypocrisy is hilarious!  We can’t quite understand that every country in which we intervene feels exactly the same way.
