It’s Time To Show Compassion For Pamela Smart

Thursday, March 26th, 2015

The first post I ever wrote for this blog was about Pamela Smart.  It was over 7-years ago and you can read it here. In it I reprinted my editorial for the New Hampshire Union Leader asking people to consider a different side of the woman. Even though I lived in New York, they ran it on their front page.

I believe Smart is guilty of the crime – accessory to first degree murder – for which she was charged. Basically the screwed-up 21-year old plotted with her 15-year old boyfriend to kill her husband.  She was an audio-visual specialist in a school and he was a student. He pulled the trigger, confessed, served 25-years, and will be released from prison shortly. She maintained her innocence, refused a plea deal, and is now serving ‘life without the possibility of parole.’

People hate Pame Smart.  She was young, beautiful, and a few Hollywood movies (with Nicole Kidman and Helen Hunt) made her into a character who was a wild, sex-crazed, manipulator of young guys. This often-published photo of her – embarrassingly modest by today’s standards – pretty much sealed her fate. The public still believes the Hollywood caricature of her although it’s far from true.

After 25-years in prison, I believe our justice system should release Smart on parole. She poses no risk to anyone but more important, an element of our system is justice balanced with mercy. I believe freeing Pamela Smart will show the world we are as civilized as we say.

“This Is Your Captain Freaking”

Thursday, March 26th, 2015

This week’s strange air crash involving a pilot locked out of the plane’s cabin may have reminded you of an unusual incident in this country in 2012.  It was on JetBlue Flight 191 from New York to Las Vegas.

About 3-hours into the flight, Captain Clayton Osbon began behaving erratically with the controls of the large, commercial jet. He then went to the mens room and came out screaming at the passengers:  “They’re going to take us down!” and “There’s a bomb on board! Al-Queda-Iraq-Afghanistan!” and “Better start saying your prayers!”

By this time the copilot had locked the cabin’s door – which enraged the pilot further – and called the control tower for instructions.  Passengers and crew members tackled the 6’4” pilot tying him with seat belt extenders and their own belts.  Once the plane landed, he was carried off by security personnel.  It was later learned he suffered an epileptic seizure.
