Who among us has not looked at a “work of art” and wondered how we could improve on it with the use of a sledgehammer?  Fortunately almost no one acts on the thought. Unfortunately, Laszlo Toth cannot be included in our group.

On May 21, 1972, Toth, 33, started smashing Michelangelo’s ‘Pieta’ at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. He shouted “I am Jesus Christ — risen from the dead!” as the shocked bystanders and security guards dragged him away. Damage to the statue? Mary’s arm was knocked off at the elbow, a chunk of her nose was chipped away, and one of her eyelids was broken. It took years to restore the masterpiece.

Toth was a Hungarian-born Australian geologist which might explain why he used his geology hammer to smash into the precious rock. He was obviously insane so without charges, Toth was committed to an Italian mental asylum in which he remained for two years demanding to see the Pope. The Pope didn’t think that was a good idea and made no comment as Toth was deported back to Australia where he died in 2012.
