He Lost His Cookies

Thursday, February 27th, 2014

Oscar Pistorius is the South African double-amputee Olympian charged with the gunshot murder of his beautiful girlfriend. He shot her through the bathroom door where, it is alleged, she was trying to hide from him.  He said it was an accident.

Charly’s Bakery posted photos of cookies decorated with images of Pistorius and messages such as “And the Oscar goes to … jail,” and one of a toilet door and a sign reading “Caution using toilet please don’t shoot!”  Another cookie showed Pistorius in front of the Nike logo with the words “Just do it. He did it.”

South African media published the photos of Charly’s Bakery cookies with the message: “Not sure if these are in good taste, but they sure taste good.”

After a firestorm of negative publicity, the bakery stopped making the cookies and apologized to the victim’s family.

Be Careful What You Wish For

The anti-gay wedding bill was vetoed in Arizona yesterday. The proposed law said that people who cater weddings, such as florists and bakers, should not be forced to serve gay ceremonies if it’s against their “religious beliefs.”  Now they are legally required to.

Symbolically it’s a victory for gay rights.  Practically, to me, it’s a potential nightmare for gay couples.  I foresee an ocean of wilted flowers, watered-down drinks, mediocre food, and faulty air conditioning in the blazing Arizona heat.  People often rebel when the government forces new mandates on individual freedom.

In the early ’60’s there was a push-back against anti-discrimination laws in the South.  I remember one interview with an angry, white barber who said, “I don’t know how to cut colored hair!”  He proved his statement again and again when he was forced to provide haircuts to black customers.  The law was followed but there were many black men walking around town with odd haircuts.

I hope anti-gay marriage retailers are professional enough to do their best for any wedding. But I’m afraid when it comes to human nature, gays won’t be able to have their wedding cake – and eat it too.
