Gay Wedding Flowers From Straight Florists?

Tuesday, February 25th, 2014

Anyone who reads this blog knows I support gay rights across the board. I support gays in the military, in sports, in the Boy Scouts, in gay marriage and virtually everywhere else in America. I believe in equality for ALL Americans.

I also believe individual rights are – or should be – a basic foundation of our free society.  So that’s why I’m confused about SB 1062, the ‘denial of services’ bill in Arizona.  Basically the bill says service providers should NOT be required to provide their goods and time to everyone regardless of race, creed, or sexual orientation.

It seems some wedding providers (caterers, bakers, florists, etc.) don’t want to work with gay weddings because of their “religious beliefs.” When some have refused their services in the past, they’ve been sued by gay couples.  This bill says they do not have to serve everyone if they choose not to.

This is America.  Hiring a specific retailer is not a constitutional right.  And yes, I feel the same way about bias against race and gender although the courts disagree.

America tolerates racists and bigots because it’s America.  If I owned a restaurant and you and your family came in and sang a loud, evangelical Christian grace – I’d throw you the fuck out.  I wouldn’t want you to disturb my Jewish, Buddist, Muslim, agnostic, or atheist diners.

I believe every private retailer should have that same right.

From The Land Of Idi Amin

Tuesday, February 25th, 2014

Idi between courses of political opponents.

Remember Idi Amin, the dancing cannibal who was Uganda’s president in the 1970’s? The guy who tortured and murdered tens of thousands of his people, ate a few of them, and put on display the body parts of his hacked and cruelly sewn-together mistress?

Does “Eatie” represent the “African values” about which Ugandan President Museveni spoke yesterday condemning gays?  He called gays “disgusting” and chuckled over some junior high “fag” jokes in front of reporters.  I’d prefer to think African values are more eloquently expressed by Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.

Uganda's foreign ministers.

We should remember that the seeds of Africa’s anti-gay hysteria were planted by Christian missionaries during the colonial period.  And the continued fury is being fueled today by white, evangelical Christian groups imported from America.  I wonder if the Westboro Baptist Church has a satellite office over there?

I believe America should immediately stop buying anything made in Uganda.  Christ!  Doesn’t our country already have enough native clay pots, carved masks, and fake ceremonial spears?
