Coo-Coup

Egyptian animals throwing one of their enemies to death.

On July 3rd, General Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi forced President Mohammed Morsi out of power in Egypt. Morsi was later arrested and riots broke out in the streets of Cairo.  The hundreds of deaths we see today are the direct result of that coup.

The definition of the word “coup” is pretty clear.  Virtually every source defines it as a sudden overthrow of a leader – just like we learned in school.  But that represents a problem for the Obama administration.  The United States cannot give military aid to a country during a coup – we have to “recognize” the legitimate leaders first. And we have $1.5 Billion of aid – mostly military – ready to go to Egypt.  We just don’t know to whom we should send it. Uh, oh.

Well, the White House says (with a straight face) it really wasn’t a coup because the military did not act to take over the nation – but to restore democracy.  Whew!  Although this sounds like the mantra of every other junta winner (“free elections coming soon!”) Obama says it’s not the same – the law doesn’t apply.  Why?  Because he says so.

Interventionism isn’t free for American taxpayers.
