Counterfeiter Stamped Out

Friday, June 14th, 2013

How bad is the recession? Last week Alcides “Amigo” Marcelino  was  charged with three counts of possession and sale of counterfeit postage stamps in Buffalo, NY.

The indictment said Amigo sold counterfeit Lady Liberty and U.S. Flag Forever stamps in 2010 and 2012. The main postal facility in Buffalo discovered the Federal scam from numerous letters with the stamps affixed. They were being sold at small, retail grocery locations in the Buffalo area.  Amigo’s charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 5- years or a fine of $250,000 or – both.

There are a few problems here.  At just 44¢ apiece, you’ve got to make and sell a whole lot of stamps to make it worth risking prison and a hefty fine. Also, if your customers turn them in, they’ll get back nothing except a ‘thanks’ from the government.  And if they use them, they risk jail time too.
