Bea’s Bobos

Friday, May 17th, 2013

The value of things is often determined by their scarcity. If you could find diamonds on the streets like sidewalk popcorn for pigeons, we would not place such a high price on them.  Boob shots of Kim Kardashian, Pamela Anderson, and Paris Hilton aren’t worth much on the open market because they’re so common.

That’s the only reason I can think of why a picture of Beau Arthur’s breasts  would fetch close to $2-million dollars at Christie’s auction house this week.  That’s almost a million dollars per painted boob.

Of course Bea Arthur is a Tony and Emmy show business legend.  She’s known all over the world for her great onstage and onscreen performances – but not for her breathtaking body. She was an attractive woman but I doubt Hugh Hefner ever said, “Who’ll be our Playmate this month?  Mariah Carey … or Bea Arthur?”

John Currin, the artist who painted Ms. Arthur in 1991, also painted her in clothes.  Both images are strictly from his imagination because the woman never sat for a portrait with this man. So what we really have here is a painting of what John Currin THINKS Bea Arthur’s boobs looked like.  For $2-million dollars.

It may be time for me to go back to my own planet.
