Guernica

Tuesday, November 6th, 2012

Pablo Picassi painted Guernica in 1937 after seeing the bombing of a Spanish village by German and Italian warplanes. It shows the senseless slaughter of helpless, innocent civilians by nameless, faceless machines from the skies.  Kind of like the drones we launch into the mountains of Afghanistan today.

I try to imagine the horror of seeing my little brothers and sisters and my parents blown to bits. First alive, and then immediately ripped to dripping pieces scattered over the ruins of our devastated home.

I know as a child, I would be filled with passionate feelings of hatred and a desire for revenge.  It wouldn’t matter to me if I killed my enemy with a pistol or a bomb next to a building – even if it also meant killing innocent bystanders.
