When Is Enough Enough?

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

I respect teachers a lot. I think overall they do an excellent job under very difficult conditions.  They have to teach students who are the results of poverty and broken families.

And that’s why we compensate them so well.

A  Chicago teacher makes on average about $74,000/year and receives roughly $24,000 in benefits. That’s about $100,000 for a 9-MONTH YEAR (the 2nd highest in the country.) The average family in Chicago makes less than half that working 12-months.

Teachers make good money because they deserve it. Now they should just get back to work – or be fired. There are many thousands of substitute teachers, part-time teachers, and teacher applicants who would love those teaching jobs.

I know there are other issues in these negotiations like merit pay, a 56% graduation rate, “60-hour” work weeks, teacher “sacrifices”, and tenure.  But all of these are almost impossible to measure and balance.  So just going by the salary numbers, this seems like a no-brainer.

There’s one more number: 350,000 idle Chicago students many of whom have working class parents missing work because they can’t afford babysitters.
