A Senior Moment

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Students who are seniors in high school in Durango, Colorado can choose their own yearbook pictures. Obviously the photos have to be in good taste and specifies “tops must fully cover the chest, back, abdomen and sides of the student.”

Sydney Spies, 18 and an aspiring model, pushed the envelope a little with this picture saying she was just “expressing herself.”  Although Colorado law states “students of the public schools shall have the right to exercise freedom of speech and of the press and shall not be subject to prior restraint,” the yearbook committee rejected the photo.

“We are an award-winning yearbook.” said the editor, “We don’t want to diminish the quality with something that can be seen as unprofessional.”

Paolo is still laughing. I’m remembering that high schools and some students are still battling in their road to being adults (both sides) – and that 4 out of 5 members of the yearbook committee are girls.  Hell hath no fury like a bitch whose boyfriend is checking out a lady with blond hair and a cute butt.

I’m also thinking Sydney is a pretty smart woman knowing that a national controversy will do nothing to hurt her modeling career,
