Arrest Him With Respect, Buddy

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

I don’t know much about the “Occupy Wall Street” demonstrations rolling across 3-dozen cities in America.  I wish they’d just focus on 1-issue – like ending America’s goddam military adventures.  But that’s just me.

The OWS protests took an ugly turn in Boston last night.  Members of Veterans for Peace were demonstrating and/or trying to protect the protesters who were warned by the police to “break it up or get arrested.”

These days what usually follows is like a well-rehearsed dance.  The cameras start up, protesters are warned, the police start walking into the crowd, those who choose to stand there for symbolic reasons get arrested (often in plastic handcuffs), are arraigned that night, and immediately released for a later court date.  Last night was different.

The Vets didn’t move, the police got a little rough, and when you watch the video, I’ll bet you’ll be more sad than angry.  The police aren’t the enemy – they’re in the “99%” just like most of us.  But when American police have to push and arrest American Veterans it’s heartbreaking – just freakin’ heartbreaking.
