Lift The Ban On Muslim Clothes

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Weightlifter Kulsoom Abdullah was disqualified for the American Open weightlifting tournament because her Muslim faith demanded she be covered except for her face and hands.

Why do clothes matter when the only thing that really counts is the amount of iron you can put into the air?  Hmmm.  I was undecided until I heard the “reasons why”.  Some committee said the clothes might be dangerous or blind the judges ability to see if she locked her elbows.

Then I knew it was all a crock of horseshit.  I decided the real reasons are: “this is the way we’ve always done it and we’re not making any exceptions for Muslims.”  In other words, typical, narrow-minded lack of acceptance of anything different.  It wasn’t too long ago that Blacks were excluded from many sports – just because they were Black – and different.

The world has 2-Billion Christians in it.  It also has 1.5 Billion Muslims.  If we don’t start finding better ways to get along, the toughest competition will not be in the Olympics.

At the 2012 London Olympics, Muslim women boxers will be allowed to be covered for competition.  But this is America – land of the free and (sometimes) ignorant.

Have It Our Way, Oddballs

In 1998 Burger King took out a full page ad in USA Today announcing a “Left-Handed Whopper” specially designed for left-handed Americans. The new burger included the same ingredients as the original Whopper but all the condiments were rotated 180-degrees to accommodate left-handers.

Lefties were delighted! Finally – the world was recognizing that not all people are right-handed and the other 11% of the population was getting some respect. Thousands of ‘right – as a second hand’ customers rushed into BK’s across the nation requesting the new sandwich.

But there was no new sandwich. Surprised at the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response, a sheepish Burger King was forced to issue a press release the next day admitting the whole thing was a hoax.

Left-handers were not amused. Now, instead of being ignored, the overly-sensitive paranoids thought they were being mocked and ridiculed by a national restaurant chain. Of course they were “right” – 90% of us know they’re genetic mutants, not ‘getting with the program’ for their entire lives.

Burger King has a pretty neat site:
