Goodbye, Dalai

Monday, March 14th, 2011

Soon the Dalai Lama is going to resign his political role in the Tibetan government-in-exile and shift that power to an elected representative.  He’ll  propose amendments to the exile constitution which would allow it to hold a special election for his successor.

Of course China, which exercises a heavy-handed rule over Tibet, scoffed at the announcement.  China vilified the Dalai Lama as a political schemer and intends to have the final say in naming his successor when he dies.  The DL is said to be the direct descendent (18th generation) of Buddha himself.

Although I’m not a fan of religious leaders, I kind of always liked the Dalai Lama.  He is humble, speaks in loving terms, and chuckles a lot.  I think he knows something the rest of us don’t know.
