White House spokesman Jay Carney is expected to deny any administration involvement in the Justice Department’s debacle of secretly seizing telephone records of AP offices and reporters for a two-month period in 2012. This is a nearly unprecedented violation of America’s Freedom of the Press rights and just the latest Obama scandal-du-jour.
Carney continues to deliver his “hey-it wasn’t us” act which he’s perfected on issues like sequestration targets, Bengazi, and IRS “enemy” audits.
Here’s what people can’t seem to understand: Obama did not directly order Justice officials to seize those records. He didn’t have to – he created an atmosphere for finding the sources of information leaks in which his underlings knew “the ends justify the means” – legal or not. Nixon did the same thing on Watergate. Bush and Cheney did the same thing on torture. Technically it’s called “Plausible Denial.”
There isn’t going to be a “smoking gun” like a memo saying “spy on these bastards” – signed “O.” High-ranking political crooks are much more sophisticated that that. But they steal our rights and our money just the same. When backed into a corner, they’ll snarl, “IT WAS FOR NATIONAL SECURITY!” and then Americans will shrug and go back to watching “America’s Got Talent.”
